Gangster Abu Salem on Wednesday was sentenced to life imprisonment by a special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities court for murdering builder Pradip Jain in March, 1995. Salem’s former driver Mehdi Hasan received the same punishment. The third person convicted in the case, 86-year old VK Jhamb, was asked to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh. He will not be taken into custody as he had already served a jail term between 2005 and 2006. Salem was extradited from Portugal in 2005 and cannot be awarded the death sentence because of a treaty between the two countries.

The United States on Wednesday announced that spouses of H-1B visa holders will get work permit visas from May 26. According to officials, about 179,000 people could benefit from this decision.
Ready to consider suggestions on Land Acquisition Bill, says Gadkari
The Centre on Wednesday showed first signs of bowing to pressure on the Land Acquisition ordinance as Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the government is open to discussion on the consent and social impact assessment clause. The ordinance, widely perceived to be anti-farmer, has been criticised from all quarters including the Bharatiya Janata Party’s allies. Though the Modi government enjoys a simple majority in the 543-member Lok Sabha, it may stand isolated when the ordinance is put to vote in joint session of parliament
Parliamentary committee rejects government’s proposal to try juveniles as adults
The Parliamentary Standing Committee headed by Bharatiya Janata Party MP Satya Narayan Jatiya on Wednesday rejected the government’s proposal to try juveniles between 16-18 years of age as adults for serious crimes such as rape. The committee said that trying juveniles between certain age group as adults would be subjecting them to different or adult judicial system, which is against Article 14 and Article 15 i.e. equality before law and prohibition of discrimination.
No shortage of swine flu medicines, says health minister
Union Health Minister JP Nadda told the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday said that there is no shortage of swine flu medicines in the country and testing facilities are being provided free at specific government hospitals. The health minister said that there was no need to panic but warned citizens to be careful. Fifty-one new deaths were reported on Wednesday raising the death toll this year to 926 and over 16,000 people have been affected by the H1N1 virus.
